We have all experienced attempts and failures at creating changes both internally and in our circumstances. This can have negative impacts for us, including being hesitant to try again. The thing is we are changing, either intentionally for better or negatively by default. It seems we have a sort of gravitational pull toward the familiar, even when it is painful. But real change is possible.
Some proven methods for creating change:
All change starts in our mind. Set yourself up for success by getting your mind onboard. Visualize this change as if you have already accomplished it. Feel the emotion that you will feel when you have created this change.
Start small. One or two changes at a time. Think each one through carefully.
• How will making this change benefit you and others?
This is your Why
• What will making this change involve?
This is your How
• What steps do you need to put in place to make it happen?
This is your detailed Plan
• What obstacles do you need to plan for?
• Make sure your steps are reasonable and sustainable.
Record and celebrate your wins. Track the times when you didn't follow through.
• What prevented the follow-through?
• How can you avoid that situation in the future? Plan for it, then get back
on track.
• Forgive yourself and keep going. Avoid letting an attitude of defeat take
you down.
• When it gets hard remember your why, revisit your vision, feel the emotion of accomplishing the change.
